A superlative antique Bidjar rug from northwest Persia’s Kurdistan Province, circa 1880. The navy blue field contains a madder red and sky blue medallion with Anchor pendants. The field itself is decorated with stylized leaves, flowers and vines, with greater density of decoration toward each end. Green, coral and yellow highlights serve to beautifully highlight design elements. Madder red corner spandrels and an ivory, Turtle design border frame the field. The aubergine color guard borders are an additional outstanding feature.
The outer guard border has been expertly rewoven at one end. Other minor restoration and minor touch-up. Pile in very good general condition.
As is also the case with early Fereghan Sarouk, Mohtashem Keshan, Lavar Kerman and Heriz rugs, this piece has a confluence of whimsicalness and elegance rarely matched in Persian rugs woven much later than circa 1880.
