9.4 x 11.10 Antique Bakshaish Carpet, Open Field Design, Northwest Persian, Circa 1890
This important antique northwest Persian Bakshaish carpet from the Heriz district features an open field format with a rare combination of a large ivory medallion and an ivory border. Sky blue corner spandrels frame the red field. The border features a wide range of colors including aubergine, coral, green, soft yellow, brick red and sky blue. The large size of the ivory medallion allowed the weaver to leave ample open space between the design elements and also serves to lighten the carpet.
