Project Description

3.6 x 4.10 Antique Mohtashem Kashan Rug, Quatrefoil Medallion, Central Persia, Circa 1900

Antique Mohtashem Kashan rugs are rarely seen in the approximately 3 foot by 5 foot size known as a “zaronim” size. This example, from an exceptional New York family collection, features a sky blue, Quatrefoil design medallion. The rose color field was “painted” upon importation, a technique often done to Sarouk rugs, where type is applied over the original color to deepen it according to the prevailing tastes 100 or so years ago.

Antique Mohtashem Kashan rugs are considered to be the pinnacle of Persian rug production in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first decade or so of the 20th century.
