8.6 x 13.4 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Harshang Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1895
The Harshang design, which consists of various palmettes and flowerheads, is one of the most famous and beautiful formats seen in 19th century Bidjar carpets from northwest Persia’s Kurdistan Province. In this example, palmettes and flowers in shades of coral, sky blue, yellow, green and ivory decorate the navy blue field.
The major border style, which is rendered on a denim blue ground, relates to the Split Arabesque format “Gerus” Bidjar carpets from the last quarter of the 19th century.
Antique Bidjar rugs and carpets are known as “The Iron Rug Of Persia”. Woven on a wool foundation and with thick, shiny pile, this carpet should be extraordinarily durable and suitable for high traffic areas.
