9.7 x 14.5 Antique Bidjar Carpet, Open Field Design, Northwest Persia, Circa 1890
Acquired directly from a New England collection, this antique Bidjar carpet features a navy medallion, with navy and sky blue Anchor pendants on a red open field. Both the medallion and the navy corner spandrels are decorated with the classical Herati design. The yellow outlining in the corners appear to be stylized animals.
A sky blue Turtle border with ivory guard borders with meandering vines frame the field. The plain red outer banding is largely intact, a nice feature.
This antique Bidjar carpet reflects the ability of Kurdish weavers in northwest Persia to create textile art that can simultaneously incorporate minimalist use of open space with elaborate, classical motifs.
Woven on a wool foundation.
